History of Watershed Education at Cranbrook Institute of Science
Cranbrook Institute of Science began watershed education with the Rouge River Water Festival in 2003. With the assistance of partners and volunteers, the festival has grown to serve 2,000 Oakland County students in the Rouge River watershed yearly.
Launched in 2007, with the generous support of the DTE Energy Foundation, Water on the Go! Outreach Programs continue to grow each year, reaching new schools and students with Great Lakes education. In fact since its inception, Water on the Go! Outreach Programs have taught more than 40,000 students throughout Michigan.
Educational opportunities continued to expand in 2008 with the Institute’s Harris Family Great Lakes Environmental Education Programs and community partnerships. We continue efforts to reach new students and families with ideas and inspiration on how to protect Earth’s largest freshwater ecosystem. Please join us by attending a program or event, volunteering, or getting involved with your local watershed organization.
“Educating stakeholders of all constituencies about the value of clean water in their local, regional and global environment is among the most compelling and relevant challenges in restoring our Great Lakes. We believe by going into the classrooms of Michigan’s schools and educating students, teachers, parents and faculty we will begin to change the habits of our stakeholders and ultimately preserve and protect our Great Lakes and its vast ecosystem. We also believe these same students will grow up with a heightened interest and awareness regarding ecological and water-focused issues.“

Director, Cranbrook Institute of Science
