Great Lakes Place-based Education Conference Nov. 13-14, 2012

The 2012 Great Lakes Place-based Education Conference is scheduled for November 13-14, 2012 at the Kellogg Center in East Lansing, Michigan.

This meeting brings together practitioners and teachers from formal and non-formal education, local partners from communities across the region, and other organizations that provide vital leadership and resources to the cause of developing environmental stewards of the Great Lakes and its ecosystems.

Urban Field Observations in Science Teacher Program

The Belle Isle Nature Zoo (BINZ) is actively seeking applications for the Urban Field Observations in Science teacher training program. Participants will have the opportunity to learn a variety of environmental monitoring techniques in a hands-on atmosphere. Tips on how to incorporate these techniques into current classroom curriculum and the tools needed to involve your students are all included. This program is funded through the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration’s (NOAA) Bay Watershed Education and Training (B-WET) Program.

The program will take place during the 2012/2013 school year. Teachers will:

• Participate in mudpuppy field monitoring
• Participate in the Adopt-a-Beach program
• Learn water quality monitoring techniques
• Learn how to use citizen science in their classrooms
• Receive curriculum to take back to their classrooms
• Receive a resource backpack to use in their class

Introductory workshop dates at the Belle Isle Nature Zoo:

• Oct. 20 - 21, 2012
• Oct. 27 - 28, 2012
• Nov. 3 - 4, 2012
• Nov. 10 - 11, 2012

Michigan Alliance for Environmental and Outdoor Education Conference Oct. 12-14

Register now for the Oct.12-14, 2012 Michigan Alliance for Environmental and Outdoor Education Conference. This year’s conference has a selection of outstanding workshops and field trips to choose from, as well as a full day of sessions, and interesting evening activities.

WetlandsLIVE on October 10 from the USDA Forest Service

Explore the wonders of wetlands during a live webcast on October 10 from 1 to 2 p.m. Eastern Time with WetlandsLIVE: A Distance Learning Adventure.  Wade into wetlands to learn about the characteristics of wetlands, different kinds of wetlands, their functions and importance as well as the threats to wetlands and how to help conserve these important ecosystems. If you aren't able to watch the program live, it will be archived as streaming video and you can watch later.

During the webcast, your students can visit some special wetlands on the east and west coast to learn about wetland ecology, watersheds, their importance to migrating fish and birds, and much more. The program will be webcast live from Boundary Bay located right on the boundary between the United States and Canada near Vancouver, British Columbia.
