Pontiac Students have fun at Ecology Camp at Cranbrook Institute of Science

Middle School students from Pontiac, Michigan attended Ecology Camp, June 25 - July 1, at Cranbrook Institute of Science.  One of the highlights of the week was constructing miniature-sized boats out of natural materials and floating them on the Rouge River.  The week was filled with swimming and many ecology activities.  For more information about camps at Cranbrook Institute of Science, visit our website.

July 16th - Rain Gardens of Lathrup Village Self-Guided Tour

Sat. July 16,  2011; 9 am - Noon
Starting point/registration:  Lathrup Village Municipal Park; 27400 Southfield Rd. (location of the park - 3 blocks north of I-696; east side)

This free tour features five front-yard rain gardens at Lathrup Village homes.  The gardens feature native plants as well as a compost-rich planting mix that soaks up rain water and filters out pollutants.  Lathrup Village has a network of 28 rain gardens that help keep storm water out of the drains leading to the Rouge River - a beautiful solution to water pollution.

Please pre-register (free tour) by calling the SOCWA office weekdays: 248-288-5150 or e-mail LFDean@aol.com.  The tour takes about 1 hour, so come anytime before 11 am.

Native wildflowers wlll be available for purchase from the Oakland Wildflower Farm.  Several other exhibits...as well as the Lathrup Village Children's Garden...and the Municipal Rain Garden...are worth a visit.
