The Michigan Alliance for Environmental and Outdoor Education held their Annual Conference in Pellston, MI from October 8-10, 2010 at the University of Michigan Biological Station. Along the beautiful shores of Douglas Lake, 200 educators from around the state attended top-notch professional development sessions from nationally-recognized speakers and experts from around the Great Lakes region.
The popular Saturday Share-A-Thon featured many fun, hands-on activities, demonstrations and equipment to teach students about protecting and restoring the Great Lakes, including Cranbrook Institute of Science! Water-related workshops and sessions included: Limnology & Fish Ecology Workshop by Dr. John Gannon (International Joint Commission) and Dr. David Jude (University of Michigan); Engaging Students in Great Lakes Stewardship & Adopt-A-Beach Program by Darrell Hendrickson & Lake Superior Stewardship Initiative Teacher Team (Washington Middle School); Using Remotely-Operated Vehicles (ROV) to study the Aquatic Environment by Keith Forton (Traverse City Central High School); Introduction to Recreational Kayaking by Lynn Dominguez (Central Michigan University); The Maple River: Using Aquatic Invertebrates and Dissolved Oxygen to Compare Steam Quality by William Hodges (Holt High School); Planning and Hosting a Water Festival by Lisa Appel (Cranbrook Institute of Science); Water Quality Testing by Randi Fires & Emily Hughes (Friends of the Rouge); Hatcheries, Habitat & the health of the Great Lakes Fishery by John Spieles (MDNRE).
